The devotional spirit of Odia literature finds a new voice in Bhakti Saangitika: Devotional Songs in Odia by Sarangadhar Baral, popularly known as “Saranga” in the literary sphere. This heartfelt collection of devotional songs is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Puri Dham, and carries the deep spiritual essence of Odia culture. The book is a poetic expression of devotion, longing, and surrender, where the author, through his soul-stirring lyrics, presents a devotee’s love, admiration, and even gentle remonstrance toward the Lord in moments of worldly despair.
The journey of Bhakti Saangitika to publication was not without challenges. Initially scheduled for release in 2022, an earlier publishing agreement fell through, leaving the project in limbo. However, the author’s dedication and perseverance finally brought this long-awaited work to life, making it available to readers who seek solace in devotional poetry. This book stands as a significant contribution to the tradition of bhakti literature in Odisha, drawing inspiration from the rich legacy of saint-poets while infusing it with the author’s personal spiritual experiences and vision.
Each song in the collection resonates with rhythm and melody, making them not just lyrical compositions but potential renditions for musical performances. They align with the geet-sangeet tradition, where poetry and music merge to create a divine experience. The themes of these songs revolve around devotion, the fleeting nature of human suffering, and the ultimate refuge in the Lord’s grace. The poet embodies the voice of a humble devotee, echoing the sentiments of countless worshippers who turn to Lord Jagannath in times of need and joy.
The author, Sarangadhar Baral, was born in 1960 in Ghatakuli, Puri District, Odisha. A distinguished academic, he serves as a senior Professor of English at Mizoram University, where he has also held key administrative positions, including Dean of the School of Education and Humanities.
