Critics have also been generous with their feedback, noting the story’s atmospheric tension and psychological depth. Some readers have shared that they felt chills while reading it. I remember one recent comment on my Instagram: a reader told me he had just started the book and was already feeling a scary sensation. He mentioned that he hadn’t finished reading yet, but after reading just one story, he couldn’t sleep the whole night—exactly the reaction I aimed to evoke! Of course, there are always diverse perspectives, and I value every piece of feedback in my ongoing effort to improve my storytelling.
Akhila Saroha: What was the initial spark or idea that led you to write “Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror”? Were there any personal experiences, specific events, or people in your life that served as inspiration for this work?
Shaheen Kazi: The inspiration for “Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror” came from those books, which I have always read from many horror-thriller books. After writing “13 Nights of Tricks,” I sought compelling stories. Before becoming an author, I was an avid reader, and I still am. I’ve read many books over the years, and while I had plenty of ideas and plots in mind, I needed a strong foundation for my story.
One particular story is based on actual events involving a close relative. However, as authors, we often blend fact with fiction. Once I settled on the plot, I began developing my ideas and themes.
Akhila Saroha: When structuring “Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror”, how challenging was it for you to decide the order and placement of ideas throughout the book? What approach did you take to ensure that the themes remained accessible and easily understandable for readers without diluting the depth of your message?
Shaheen Kazi: ** Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror ** was both challenging and rewarding. My goal was to create a compelling narrative that weaves suspense, character development, and thematic depth while keeping the reader engaged. To achieve this, I first outlined the key events and themes I wanted to explore, concentrating on the overarching mystery and the characters’ emotional journeys. This is why the book is divided into sections ‘Before Party’ and ‘The Party. ‘ I found it helpful to identify pivotal moments that would serve as anchor points in the story, ensuring that each chapter built on the last while maintaining a pacing that kept readers on the edge of their seats.
I also included clear character motivations and relatable emotions that resonate universally with readers. Striking the right balance between depth and clarity was essential; I invited readers to ponder the underlying messages while ensuring the plot remained engaging and easy to follow.
4. Akhila Saroha: What are your thoughts on the state of contemporary literature, particularly in relation to how well it captures and represents the complexities of human nature? In your view, does present-day writing do justice to portraying the human experience, especially in light of the themes you explored in “Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror”?
Shaheen Kazi: Contemporary literature presents a fascinating landscape filled with diverse voices and a wide range of themes that reflect the complexities of human nature. Many writers today commendably explore the multifaceted aspects of our experiences—our fears, desires, and the sometimes murky nature of our memories.
For my project, *Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror,* I aimed to delve into themes such as the struggle between the past and present, the haunting nature of memories, and the universal fear of loss. These themes resonate deeply with readers because they reflect real emotional experiences, even when presented within a horror narrative. Horror, in particular, is a powerful metaphor for the darker aspects of the human experience, allowing us to confront our fears in a safe space.
However, while a wealth of literature addresses these complexities, there are still areas where representation can improve. Certain narratives and perspectives remain under-represented, and there is always room for more inclusive stories that reflect the full spectrum of human experience.
Overall, I am optimistic about the direction of contemporary writing. Authors are increasingly willing to tackle complex subjects, and readers are seeking more profound, introspective narratives. As writers, we are responsible for pushing boundaries and exploring the intricate layers of human nature, which is precisely what I aspire to do in my work.
Akhila Saroha: Your distinctive style of writing really stands out in “Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror”. Are there any specific authors or literary works that have influenced your writing style or that you particularly enjoy reading? Could you share some of your favorite books or authors with us?
Shaheen Kazi: Thank you for your kind words! Various authors and literary works that resonate with me have significantly shaped my writing style. I find inspiration in writers who skillfully blend atmospheric storytelling with psychological depth, particularly in horror and literary fiction.
One author who has influenced my writing is Stephen King. I aspire to emulate his ability to create relatable characters facing extraordinary circumstances and his talent for building suspense. Books like Pet Sematary, 1922, and The Shining have left a lasting impression on me, as they explore themes of grief and memory in deeply affecting ways.
Another significant influence is Shirley Jackson, especially her novel *The Haunting of Hill House*. Jackson’s exploration of psychological horror and the complexities of human relationships inspires me to delve deeper into the emotional undercurrents of my characters.
Additionally, I enjoy reading Ruskin Bond for his evocative descriptions and ability to capture the essence of place and memory. I am exploring his magic in my writing style for my next book, which I am writing. Ruskin Bond’s storytelling style has influenced me as a reader and writer, as I like to discover how I approach the setting and atmosphere of my work.
Overall, I gravitate towards authors who can weave rich, layered narratives reflecting the complexities of human emotions, and I strive to achieve this in my writing.

Shaheen Kazi: Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror occupies a unique space in the horror genre, blending elements of psychological suspense, supernatural fiction, and even touches of literary fiction. I would categorize it primarily as a psychological horror novel, as it delves into the intricacies of memory, loss, and the past while intertwining these themes with supernatural elements.
The book’s broader appeal comes from its exploration of universal human experiences—grief, nostalgia, and the fear of the unknown. I believe it resonates with readers who appreciate stories that entertain and provoke thought and introspection.

Akhila Saroha: You chose to write “Dark & Disturbed: Echoes of Horror” in prose form, which has given the book a distinctive rhythm and flow. What made you decide to express your ideas in prose rather than other forms of writing, such as poetry or hybrid formats?
Shaheen Kazi: Prose offers an immersive storytelling experience that allows for deep character development and a rich atmosphere essential for horror. Its rhythm builds suspense and tension while revealing the story’s layers. Through prose, I can create vivid descriptions and characters that draw readers into my world.
Poetry captures powerful emotions concisely, but the themes of *Dark & Disturbed*—psychological depth, memory, and trauma—need a broader prose format to explore their nuances fully.
I enjoy experimenting with language and structure in my prose, using techniques like flashbacks and perspective shifts to highlight themes of memories and haunting experiences. My writing captures the chilling atmosphere and complex emotions of the story.

Shaheen Kazi: The themes in “Dark & Disturbed,” such as memory, loss, and the haunting nature of the past, are often overlooked in contemporary discussions. Society tends to favour positive narratives, avoiding uncomfortable truths. Conversations about trauma and grief require vulnerability and introspection, which can be intimidating for many.
These themes are essential for understanding the human condition. By acknowledging life’s darker aspects, we can embrace our whole selves and foster healing and growth. Through fiction, I aim to create a safe space for readers to confront their fears and reflections.
