The Literature Times: What motivates you to become a writer?

Author: The prime duty of a teacher is to explain the topic in a simple language so that even an average student finds it interesting. With over 30 years of experience in medical teaching, we find that making students understand the underlying mechanisms is the basic pillar of Physiology and it has been our constant endeavour as authors.

The Literature Times: What are your favorite writing topics? Please tell us a little bit about your literary interests.

Author: We are physiologists. Physiology is a fascinating science in the sense that it is never static; New discoveries and new mechanisms deciphered make it a dynamic science and that’s why it’s a pleasure as well as the privilege to impart knowledge in the field of Physiology.

The Literature Times: We were hoping you might tell us about some of the authors who have influenced you and whom you read!

Author: As students and faculty of Physiology, we have come across timeless texts in Physiology like Guyton, Ganong, Best and Taylor, Samson Wright. On the basis of foundations of these stalwarts only, an Indian author can construct edifice of his book.

The Literature Times: The title is unique and appealing; how did you come up with it? Please tell us the story behind it.

Author: Even though there are large number of Physiology books available for medical students, our experience told us that nervous system and special senses are the topics which are considered difficult to comprehend by the students. Hence, we came out with an idea of devoting a separate book for neurophysiology. We are of the opinion that complexity of the science of neurophysiology deserves a separate text.

The Literature Times: What are your achievements so far? Tell us something about your writing career.

Author: As academicians, we have fulfilling careers with an experience of about 30 years of teaching in medical colleges across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Working in various capacities like Vice Principle, Dean, Member of Board of Studies, PhD guide, and Examiner, we have widened our understanding of the subject and gauged requirement of the students.

We ventured into the writing career with the book titled “Principles of Exercise Prescription”. This was followed by another  book “A Concise Textbook of Physiology”. Both these books have been well received by our audience. “Textbook of Neurophysiology” is our 3rd venture in the field of writing.

The Literature Times: What is your current goal in writing a career? How do you see your future in writing?

Author: With first year in the medical colleges being reduced to one year, it poses quite a challenge for learners as well as educators. Students find it difficult to cope up with the studies in a limited time. Hence, as authors it’s our endeavour to write books in simple language which are easy to understand, and which will help students in their examinations without compromising the basics.

The Literature Times: Do you have any other novels in the works? Please keep us updated on your future endeavors.

Author: Creativity is a thing which is never satiated. Hence, we would like to come up with work that would help students cope with stresses of medical education.

The Literature Times: How do you view Indian writing in the twenty-first century? What changes do you see in today’s writing style? Do you feel it has changed over time?

Author: When we were students, we have read the classics in Physiology which we mentioned earlier like Guyton and Ganong. However, in today’s fast paced world the matter has to be condensed in manageable chunks and made palatable. Given the limited attention span of today’s students, authors have to be ‘To the point’. Also, students need to be introduced to the recent advances. So as authors, we have to balance this tight rope walk.

The Literature Times: How simple/difficult was it for you to publish your book? What message do you want to send to aspiring authors?

Author: We had a very good experience with Astitva Prakashan during publishing the ‘Textbook of Neurophysiology’. Their approach is professional. They have dedicated advisor to advise you on the technical aspects as well. This makes it pleasant experience for the authors.
